Water vapour gets everywhere – and causes a whole spectrum of special problems in marine environments – from failing electronics to "watertight"seals through to equipment that jams and consumables that rot. 

Fortunately Versaperm has developed a new highly accurate, multi-chamber mass-spectroscopy based instrument that allows you to identify and correct problems by measuring vapour permeability not just for water vapour but for hydrocarbons, CO2 and virtually every other gas/ vapour.  And it does it with just a single measurement.

The system works as well on enclosures, equipment, products and seals as it does on food and medical packaging - or even material samples.

The equipment is fast, easy to use and offers an accurate way to measure the rate that moisture and other vapours infiltrate equipment, electronics, enclosures and packages.

Results are accurate in the Parts Per Million (PPM) range for most materials, and you can measure several separate material samples, seals, enclosures or electronic devices at a single time.

This menace of vapour is very much more serious than most people realise – products that include materials like cellulose, EVOH or PVOH offer an excellent barrier against liquids, but they allow water vapour to flow in virtually unhindered!  The same thing happens, to a greater or lesser extent, for almost every other material and piece of equipment. 

Versaperm also offers a vapour permeability laboratory service for companies which only need to test samples on an irregular basis.

Editor's Note: Surprisingly, liquid water itself isn't the big problem, even in marine environment with liquids sloshing around.  The difficulty is the invisible vapours that come from water and other liquids, such as fuel, which permeates through the actual materials things are made from and then condense on the inside.  Vapours continually permeate through the walls of electronic cases and enclosures - even into individual components.  Water vapour alone has caused missiles to crash, computers to crash and all manner of products to fail, rot and become contaminated.
